Upgrading

Every upgrade is forged at the Anvil, and every one consumes the tool it replaces — so a tool is never bought twice and the cheap one at the bottom of a ladder is the first step of the expensive one at the top. The recipes are known from the start; what gates them is the bars and the crystals they ask for.
Two ladders take a detour. The Sturdy Pickaxe is forged from the Rusty and the Basic pickaxe together, and the Sturdy Axe likewise, so both of those lines want two tools in hand before they will climb. The other three take only the rung below.
