Journal

Journal is the interface that keeps notes found in the world and mail received by the player. It is opened by interacting with a journal desk, including the Brown Journal Desk.

Contents

Journal entries retain their sender, subject and body text. Entries can contain clues, reminders, letters, attachments or notices that enable tasks and other events. The journal uses separate read and unread presentations for its entries.

The Mail article contains the existing letter and attachment catalogue. World notes are also kept in the journal; the interface is not limited to posted letters.

Reading and attachments

Opening an entry displays its contents. Pressing OK collects its attachments and marks the corresponding entry read. Depending on the letter, attachments can include items, equipment or currency. Collected attachments are possessions, rather than reusable rewards every time the text is opened.

Reading particular letters can change the world or task state. Some related updates are applied when the journal screen closes. Ordinary inventory overflow and storage checks still apply to received possessions; see Inventory and Storage.

Progression notices

The journal's follow-up checks include access notices, additional task availability, recipe and shop-stock changes, and the notice that starts The Elder Gem. These effects have their own prerequisite progress and are not activated by an unrelated letter.

Examples of journal-related progression include the Ranch access notice, Klaus' house-expansion availability, additional Herb tasks and later cooking stock. The relevant character or task article describes the particular condition.

Journal objects

A placed journal desk opens the same journal interface; it does not create an independent collection of notes for each desk. The Lost Journal task is a separate world request and should not be confused with the player's journal interface.
