Saving and Loading

Saving and Loading records and restores the player's progress. Manual saves occupy chosen slots, while the autosave is a separate, rotating checkpoint. Loading restores the state recorded at that checkpoint rather than combining it with the current game.

Save types

Type Creation Use Death behavior
Manual save Save command at the bed or another save point A chosen slot stores a persistent checkpoint. Occupied slots require overwrite confirmation. Retained when an autosave is erased.
Autosave Automatic checkpoints and explicit event checkpoints A single rotating recent checkpoint; displayed separately at the top of the title-screen load list. Erased on Hard, Nightmare, or Custom with autosave erasure enabled.
Loaded save Continue / load screen Restores the selected checkpoint, including its character, inventory, world progress and saved loadouts. Loading an older checkpoint returns to its recorded progress.

Manual saving

The bed offers Save separately from Sleep and Difficulty. Other save points can also open the save screen. The save-file interface provides manual slots, with an overwrite confirmation for occupied slots. Save names can contain up to 20 characters; the save-file interface also supports renaming and deleting saves.

Custom Difficulty can restrict saving through the bed to once per one, two, three, four or five days. With No limit, this bed cooldown is disabled. The bed checks the cooldown before opening the save screen and starts it when that screen closes, so cancelling out of the screen can still start the interval.

Saving through the bed does not itself select Sleep. Sleeping has its own recovery, time and hazard rules, described under Sleep.

Autosave

The game has one autosave slot. Automatic and event-specific checkpoints can replace it, so it is a record of recent progress rather than a history of earlier checkpoints. Autosaving can be suppressed during particular event sequences.

The title-screen load list keeps Autosave at the top and displays manual saves beneath it. Moving down from Autosave selects the last accessed manual save when available. Occupied manual-save entries have a different background tint from empty entries.

Death

Hard and Nightmare erase the autosave and return to the game-over flow. Custom can enable the same outcome. The surviving manual saves determine the progress that can then be loaded. Cozy Game, Easy and Normal instead use the home recovery sequence and ordinary gold penalty; Custom without autosave erasure uses its chosen gold penalty.

The introductory tutorial has a separate death-recovery sequence. See Difficulty for the standard and custom death rules.

Saved information

A save contains the player, party possessions, equipment, world and task progress, and saved Equipment Loadouts. Loading an earlier save restores that earlier arrangement and progress. Player Levels and Skill Levels are likewise part of the saved game.
