Library — Professor Dayton — Conversation

When: The Stone Tower ≥ 10.

  • “I hope all is well on the farm.”
  • “I have a feeling that strange cultists won't be bothering you there, anymore.”
  • “Though, there are no shortage of other strange things to be bothered by, around here.”
Catacombs research — Initial conversation

When: the player has Essence of Kaal.

  • “This is it... the final Essence.”
  • “The Essence of Kaal!”
  • “You really are remarkable. When I sent you down to the Deep Mall, I thought this might be an interesting distraction.”
  • “But... to return with all 3 of these rare objects... I'm simply amazed.”
  • “In the depths of the old stone tower, far below your quaint, familiar farmstead, there lies a being of ancient and terrible power.”
  • “The cultists of Xxarteck, whom you've encountered already, no-doubt know of this being's existence.”
  • “I am certain that they plan to wake this monster.”
  • “They seek to wake the Emissary of Xxarteck.”
  • “If they succeed in this mission... it will mean the end for us all.”
  • “The Essences, I'll admit, are not terribly important on their own.”
  • “My true motive was to see if you could handle the depths of Elderfield, for it is down there that you will find what is truly needed to save us all from ruin.”
  • “You may have seen a great iron key, hanging from the wall of the Elderfield Art Gallery.”
  • “The lost souls tied to that place guard this key, and for good reason.”
  • “You see, that key is the key to the final room of the stone tower.”
  • “It is the key to the Emissary of Xxarteck itself.”
  • “If that key were to fall into the hands of the Xxarteck cultists...”
  • “It would spell disaster, to say the least.”
  • “My guidance ends here. I cannot ask you to do the impossible.”
  • “It may simply be that our time has come.”
  • “But... among the objects which may soothe the spirits of the gallery, and release their hold on the key, are unique skull-like relics guarded by beings of terrible power.”
  • “You may have encountered such beings on your travels already”
  • “It is in these deep regions of Elderfield, with which you are now familiar, that the rarest of these legendary skulls are kept.”
  • “And, their keepers hold unimaginable power.”
  • “So... I leave you with this knowledge, and ask nothing of you.”
  • “Should you obtain the key, and open the final gate, I will have the utmost faith in your ability.”
  • “But, should you turn your back on this notion, and return to a life of normalcy, I would not blame you.”
  • “We will see what becomes of our strange little town, in time...”
Catacombs research — Task in progress

When: the player has Essence of Kaal.

  • “My desire to obtain these has been for the purposes of my research, but I have not yet told you what that is.”
  • “You see, there lies a great evil, waiting beneath Elderfield.”
Catacombs research — Initial conversation
  • “Seek out the great void on the 3rd floor, and descend.”
  • “Down there, you will find one of the deepest regions of Elderfield.”
  • “And, the Essence of Kaal. My final ask of you.”
  • “Bring this to me, and I will tell you what this has all been for.”
Old Woods research — Initial conversation

When: the player has Essence of Delvek.

  • “Well now... that's it... the Essence of Delvek.”
  • “You really are full of surprises...”
  • “The Deep Woods aren't a fit place for most. That you pushed through, even there, is impressive.”
  • “Perhaps you have what it takes to go all the way.”
  • “Perhaps you can handle the true depths of Elderfield.”
  • “The Deep Catacombs.”
  • “The final Essence of the old gods which I am aware of resides deep within that accursed place.”
  • “No light reaches it, and the creatures which lie within the great pit are said to be the most fearsome in all of Elderfield.”
  • “But... you've braved unimaginable terrors up to this point.”
  • “What's a few more? Hah hah.”
  • “That's no ordinary length of rope.”
  • “This enchanted coil of rope can extend to unimaginable lengths.”
  • “With this, even the great pit of the Catacombs cannot block your passage.”
Old Woods research — Completion and reward

When: the player has Essence of Delvek.

  • “Here, take this.”
Old Woods research — Initial conversation
  • “I've heard rumors that an Essence of Delvek can be found deep within the woods.”
  • “Bring this to me, and who knows...”
  • “Perhaps we can reach even the deepest parts of this accursed town.”
  • “Well, if you managed to pull this off, then perhaps you're up for a real challenge.”
  • “There are older and stranger places in Elderfield than that old mall.”
  • “You may have brushed up against them in your adventures thus far. Places shrouded in a darkness so thick that it stops you in your tracks.”
  • “One such place can be found deep within the Old Woods.”
  • “As the trees grow taller, the woods grow darker, and only those bearing a very special light source may enter.”
  • “Even the local joggers have been unable to pass into this strange region of the woods.”
  • “However... I happen to have a special light source. One which will allow entry into forbidden places.”
  • “Here, you may have it.”
  • “This peculiar lantern is no standard light source.”
  • “It feeds off of darkness to gain its power, and will only light up in the darkest regions of this world.”
  • “With this, no amount of darkness can bar your entry to any place.”
  • “With this, you can enter the Deep Woods.”
  • “But... be warned. The Deep Woods are no place for regular folk.”
  • “As the mall reached deep enough to court the eye of Daeus, the woods, in their shrouding darkness, are home to powerful beings of their own.”
Old Woods research — Request or task
  • “This is my next task for you... if you can bring me this essence, my research can progress even further.”
Mall Mines research — Initial conversation
  • “If you can gain access to the deeper parts of the mall, then perhaps you can find something for me.”
  • “I seek the Essence of Daeus, to further my research.”
  • “Find this item for me, and who knows...”
  • “Perhaps we can venture to other places, deeper and darker still...”
  • “This is it... you've found it!”
  • “The Essence of Daeus... I can scarcely believe my eyes.”
  • “If I'm honest, I had little hope that this would even be possible.”
  • “You are full of surprises...”
  • “An old command console, in the mall basement?”
  • “The mall basement...”
  • “How on earth did you get into a place like that?”
  • “Folks don't just wander down there. The elevator has been locked for ages.”
  • “If you managed to get down there...”
  • “Perhaps you and I can help each other out.”
  • “It's a strange place, down there. Not fit for most regular folk.”
  • “I've heard that the second floor of the mall is deep.”
  • “Some say, too deep.”
  • “Deep enough to reach closer to the gods.”
  • “I've heard tales of a particular god which has an interest in the mall.”
  • “Daeus, God of the Deep”
  • “...How about this:”
  • “I can provide you with a guide book to read the ancient language.”
Mall Mines research — Choice response

When: the player chooses “Sounds good to me!”.

  • “Very good...”
  • “It's an old tome, in terrible shape. But, it should last long enough for your purposes.”
Mall Mines research — Request or task

When: the player chooses “Sounds good to me!”.

Mall Mines research — Choice response

When: the player chooses “That sounds a bit dangerous...”.

  • “Indeed it is.”
  • “But, if you change your mind, just let me know...”
Research introduction — Initial conversation
  • “Information... I do have that.”
  • “My name is Professor Dayton. I'm the head researcher for the Elderfield Historical Society.”
  • “My days are spent pouring over old books and manuscripts, attempting to piece together the complicated history of our strange little town.”
Stone Tower Task — Initial conversation

When: The Stone Tower ≥ 9.

  • “You... you've... truly done it?!!”
  • “I could tell, even before you came back here. The great evil beneath the town is slain.”
  • “I could sense a terrible power growing beneath our feet, and now... nothing.”
  • “Or rather... almost nothing.”
  • “But, with the creature weakened to this extent, and the farm above the shrine now brimming with life...”
  • “I think we have little to worry about from that old stone tower, for now.”
  • “And... it is all thanks to you.”
  • “The residents of Elderfield will never know what you have done for them.”
  • “But, you will always know.”
  • “And, of course, I will.”
  • “As a reward from myself, and all those who would thank you if they could, here. Take this.”
  • “It is little reward compared to what you have given us all. But, it is something.”
  • “May your adventures be a little quieter, now.”
  • “You have certainly earned a peaceful life.”
Stone Tower Task — Request or task

When: The Stone Tower ≥ 9.

  • “One can never truly slay an emissary of the Old Gods.”
Stone Tower Task — Initial conversation

When: The Stone Tower ≥ 7.

  • “...A giant key hole, at the bottom of the tower?”
  • “So, you've made it all the way down, then...”
  • “I must advise you to end this delve.”
  • “That door is sealed for good reason...”
  • “That the cultists have not opened it is a relief.”
  • “But, if they are active that deep within the shrine... I fear they have some plan to open it.”
  • “The door is locked by a great old key. Unassuming at first, but... it is a key to the destruction of the world as we know it.”
  • “Such a key is not meant to be found.”
  • “Such a key... you will need to seek out on your own.”
Stone Tower Task — Initial conversation

When: The Stone Tower ≥ 5.

  • “A pack of cultists, and more ancient text...”
  • “It seems you're getting quite deep into that old shrine... and it is far less dormant than I had hoped.”
  • “If the cultists are already so deep inside the tower... this is surely a poor sign.”
  • “Not just for the farm, but for all of Elderfield...”
  • “While I don't like to think of what might happen if this cult is left unchecked... I must caution you not to continue.”
  • “That is... if you value your life.”
  • “All of this dungeon delving has been an interesting academic experiment until now.”
  • “But, with a violent cult delving deeper into the tower... I fear that things are about to become more dangerous than you can imagine.”
  • “Deep below that shrine... they say there is something ancient, sleeping.”
  • “But... you have come this far, and you seem surprisingly capable.”
  • “If you intend to continue, I will still aid you.”
  • “With these notes, you should be able to read any of the ancient text within the shrine.”
  • “Appease the tower, and doors will continue to open.”
  • “But... be sure you are truly ready for what you might find.”
Stone Tower Task — Initial conversation

When: The Stone Tower ≥ 3.

  • “Hmm... a big hole inside the tower?”
  • “I see...”
  • “Well, based on your notes, this is no ordinary hole.”
  • “This is an Offering Port.”
  • “Some say these ancient openings are tunnels which lead directly to the gods.”
  • “I'm not sure I believe that... but the gods do seem to notice whatever you put inside them.”
  • “It's hard to say for sure, but I suspect these holes were built as a seal.”
  • “I'm not sure what they were meant to accept, as the inscription is too vague, but we can brute-force it, in a sense.”
  • “The shrine has grown powerful after years of laying dormant. So, if you stuff plenty of new life into that old void, I'm sure the seal will fail.”
  • “I'm not sure it matters much what you put into it, so long as it's some sort of crop or animal product.”
  • “And, as for how much you'll need to toss in... of that... I am not sure, either.”
  • “So... I hope you have some extra produce laying around. You may need a fair bit of it.”
  • “I'm sure that higher quality material will fade the seal more quickly.”
Stone Tower Task — Initial conversation
  • “Hmmm... An old stone tower on Hans's farm..?”
  • “Yes... I do know about that. It's an odd, old thing.”
  • “Old... and dangerous.”
  • “There are many Old Gods who harbour a particular interest in Elderfield.”
  • “For the most part, they don't cause any real trouble, but one in particular is uniquely destructive.”
  • “Xxarteck, the God of the End, is not aligned with the interests of the citizens of Elderfield.”
  • “That old stone tower is a shrine to Xxarteck, built long ago.”
  • “When the first residents set foot here, they recognized the power of that shrine.”
  • “So, a farm was built around it as a deliberate measure to keep its power at bay.”
  • “Xxarteck is the god of the end of all things, and so the best way to keep the shrine dormant was to surround it with a constant supply of new life.”
  • “This strategy was effective, and the tower was rendered completely dormant.”
    • Player responses: “How do I get inside?”; “That's all, thanks”
Stone Tower Task — Choice response

When: the player chooses “How do I get inside?”.

  • “Well, it should be as simple as walking right in. Last I checked, there wasn't much to it.”
  • “...”
  • “I see... so the way is sealed.”
  • “I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. I've heard that the farm is not as active as it used to be.”
  • “If the door is sealed, the power of the shrine must be returning.”
  • “To open it, you'll need to bring new life back into the area.”
  • “As crops are grown and animals thrive, the power should fade. Once weakened, the door should open.”
  • “Take a closer look at the door. There should be some kind of marking on the seal.”
  • “When those markings fade completely, so too should the door.”
  • “However... be very careful.”
  • “If power has returned to the shrine... there's no telling what awaits inside.”
Stone Tower Task — Choice response

When: the player chooses “That's all, thanks”.

  • “Happy to help... our history is important.”
